What it is
New New York maps active New York City restaurants newly added to public place datasets. As of August 2026, the public restaurant API contains more than 1,400 records.
The primary restaurant history is derived from Foursquare Open Source Places releases. The project retains the earliest observed add event and labels it "First seen" because a database timestamp is not necessarily a restaurant's opening date. Baseline place data also uses Overture Maps and OpenStreetMap via Overpass.
Community submissions are accepted through Google Maps links. They are checked for a valid New York City restaurant identity, deduplicated, and reviewed before publication. A separate editorial workflow monitors nine local food and neighborhood publications, verifies candidate identities through Google Places, researches opening dates, and routes uncertain cases for human review.
The Last Call view publishes restaurants with a verified permanent closing date in the next 30 days. It requires an exact final-service date from a direct restaurant announcement or a credible report; rumors, temporary closures, and ambiguous dates are rejected.
